Today I came home from work and went straight to the backyard to check on my plants and water them. Simba eventually came outside to say hello and then we went inside. He did take a bit longer than usual to climb over the door frame but I put it down to him perhaps just having woken up from a nap and his muscles were probably not all stretched out yet.

I went about my usual business...feeding the fish, checking emails, cup of tea. On schedule at 6pm, I went into the kitchen to get Simba's dinner ready for him. Usually he hears the second we take his can of dog food out of the fridge and comes running. Tonight he didn't show up, so I thought perhaps either I was really quiet or he was tired. I spooned out his food into his bowl and quietly placed it onto the floor. I called him. No Simba. I called him again. Still no Simba.

I went into the lounge and saw him lying on my mum's beanbag. He looked up at me but didn't get up. I asked if he wanted his dinner. Usually he comes running, whether he's only just eaten a whole can of dog food or not...he always has room to eat more. He just lay there on the beanbag looking at me with a sad look. I thought perhaps he was sulking because my mum had come home to find he'd chewed a few plastic containers up and he sulks when he knows he's misbehaved until we forgive him. I went to check with my mum if he had already been fed or if my mum had been ignoring him and if that was why he was upset. My mum came out and tried to coax him to go get his dinner and he still didn't move. Now we knew there was something wrong.

We picked him up and he didn't protest. He tried to walk but he only managed to get up onto his front legs and his back legs were still in a crouched position and he wobbled a bit and sat back down. He couldn't walk! At this point I broke into tears and my mum went to get changed so we could take him to the vet. I was worried that he'd swallowed bits of sharp plastic that were cutting up his insides and causing him internal damage.

Turns out he was constipated. He'd gotten into a bag of rubbish last week (my dad had put it on the ground outside where he could get to) and must have gobbled up all the bones and any food scraps he could find. They built up inside him and caused a blockage. The vet checked his temperature - a little raised - checked a poo sample - some bones present in it - gave him two injections and an enema. Poor baby got probed three times!

We ran outside after the enema was administered and Simba was gushing everywhere. Lots of bits of bone. He looked like he was feeling alot better afterwards. We headed back home for some rest and instructions to have him on laxatives for the next few days. We took it in turns being with him for the rest of the night. He curled up on Mum's beanbag and stayed there all night.

Poor baby

After having a shower, I finally pulled myself away from Simba's side to make myself dinner. I had the steak I bought when grocery shopping yesterday so I had that.

Sirloin with Chilli, Rosemary & Thyme
served with Eggplant Chips and Panfried Grape Tomatoes
