Saturday 4th February 2012

I had lunch at Yuki with some friends today. I've been craving some sashimi! Delicious and healthy!

I love sashimi!

The long hours at work this week really caught up to me and I was feeling far too tired to go out tonight. Benoit and Ivy dropped in though. Benoit was hungry so I, being the good hostess, cooked him some wantan soup.

They stayed for dinner and we were all feeling lazy so I put together the ingredients we needed to make our own dinner.

Vietnamese Spring Rolls

Microwaved potatoes with some bolognaise sauce and lots of cheese!

The sage in my garden is growing very well.

The other day I was bored (only for a very brief moment!) and was doing my usual 'look in the pantry' thing even though I wasn't really hungry. I spied this packet of instant jellyfish and decided it would be a nice little snack.

I love jellyfish! I love how they serve it in Chinese restaurants with some shredded chicken but not many of my friends like eating it so I rarely get to order it when we go out. I saw this instant jellyfish at one of the Asian supermarkets and wanted to try it.

I followed the instructions on the packet...

I tipped out the jellyfish into a bowl. I was disappointed when I saw how much - or should I say, how little - there was! There was like two tablespoons!

I blanched the jellyfish with some boiling water and seasoned it with a few drops of sesame oil and the packet of seasoning that came with it. It was pretty stupid to go to all that effort for a few spoonfuls of jellyfish. Really stupid.

Monday 29th August 2011

I was really naughty tonight. I wanted a snack but couldn't find anything in the pantry that I felt like eating.

I remembered I had some fish paste left in the fridge from making yong tau foo earlier, so I pulled out a few pieces of wholemeal bread, spread the fish paste on, sprinkled on some sesame seeds and pan fried them for a few minutes.

I remembered how good they were when
Kong made them for a dinner we had one night.

They were just as good tonight.

Wednesday 3rd August 2011

There was a discount on some 'grilled vegetable and fetta' paste from the deli section of Woolworths today so I thought I'd give it a go. I spread some onto a slice of wholemeal bread, sprinkled some cheese over it and grilled it for a snack. Yum!

Wednesday 20th July 2011

I made hotdogs for everyone at work today.

Mum's Pork Wantan Soup

Friday 8th April 2011

This morning we used the remaining sourdough from yesterday's lunch to make cheesey toast!

I have never had vegemite on toast before so today was a first. I loved it! The saltiness with the gooey cheese is a perfect combination!

Dinner
Beef Red Curry

I enjoyed a few glasses of this wine tonight. A 2009 "Parliament of Owls" Cabernet Merlot from Golden Grape Estate in South Australia. Soooo smooth.

GREENHOUSE
100 St. Georges Terrace, Perth CBD

I have heard all good things about this little restaurant in the heart of the Perth CBD and have been eager to dine here. I caught up with a girlfriend for lunch and was instantly in awe at the design and chic-organic ambience.

Angus Beef with Romesco Sauce & Summer Vegetables - $24

The steak was perfectly cooked, the vegetables were cooked just a little under so they retained a bit of crunch and freshness. The sauce was a bit of an odd flavour to go with the steak. I would have preferred a mushroom or pepper sauce, or perhaps just a drizzle of olive infused with herbs to keep with the 'fresh' feel of the dish.

Strawberry & Yoghurt Fool with Meringue & Pistachio - $14

The dessert was fantastic! A nice, light strawberry yoghurt mousse with crumbled bits of meringue and pistachio. The fresh strawberries around the bowl were nice and sweet. A perfect summer dish.

I would love to try the cocktails here one evening!

After grocery shopping, it was nearing 5pm and the shops were beginning to close. I managed to grab two Cornjacks for half price - bargain!

Oh, how I love thee, Cornjack!

After the late afternoon snack of Cornjacks, I skipped dinner and went to Noel and Fleurette's place for drinks and nibblies. I rummaged around in the fridge and pantry for an assortment of things that we put together.

Camembert, Avocado, Pickled Chillies and fresh Bread

Herring in Hot Sauce

Ooh, the herring was awesome with a slice of fresh tomato, chilli and basil!

We also had Tomato, Cherry Bocconcini and Basil

A day of relatively healthy foods!

Friday 21st January 2011

Lunch
Chicken Pie & Chips

Dinner
Bee Hoon Soup with Fish, Prawns & Cabbage

I nice healthy dinner! I love using cabbage in noodle soups. I think the colour of the cabbage in this photo is absolutely gorgeous! It looks so fresh and green.

Friday 7th January 2011

Brunch
Pane Di Casa Vienna with diced Roma Tomatoes, Bocconcini & Basil

At work tonight, one of the cleaning ladies dropped off a surprise for me - a mini pavlova. I enjoyed it with a cup of tea. The meringue was deliciously smooth and overall it was soooo good! Just the right amount of sweetness.

Supper
Thai Basil Pork & Glass Vermicelli Stirfry

For a bit of indulgence, I enjoyed this Drambuie and Mascarpone filled Fig.

TAPAS THURSDAY

In keeping with our weekly food feast at work, we each brought in a plate today for a shared lunch.

Last night, I made these Pork, Leek and Fennel Puffs.

I cooked the mince mixture and allowed it to cook in the fridge while I used a cookie cutter to cut out the pastry circles. I put some of the mince on each circle and folded the pastry over to make little crescent moon shapes. I brushed some egg wash over the pastries before putting them into the oven.

I was watching for the pastry to puff up, but minute after minute, I noticed something was wrong. The pastry was not puffing up. Alas! I had used shortcrust pastry instead of puff pastry!

Never mind...they turned out ok. They were a bit dry but sweet chilli sauce remedied that.

Ian made baba ghanoush and happily gave us the recipe.

Gail made pizza bread.

I also made some 'crackers' from a remainder sheet of shortcrust pastry and on some I put some cream cheese, smoked salmon and dill. On the others I put some diced roma tomatoes and fresh basil.

For a snack in the afternoon, I had some natural yoghurt with berries and honey.

Wednesday 5th January 2011

With the day off work, I had a relaxed, lazy breakfast when I finally decided to get out of bed.

Breakfast
Bacon & Poached Egg on Wholemeal Toast with Baked Beans

The baked beans were Jocelyn's leftovers in the fridge. I'm trying to clean out the fridge and avoid as much food wastage as possible but there's only so much I can eat and there's only so much of the food that Jocelyn eats that I'm willing to eat. I was actually looking forward to the baked beans, but they were so bland! The tomato sauce, instead of having a sweet, tomatoey taste, was tasteless! I think Jocelyn must eat the low salt version of baked beans. They were awful! I tried adding some salt and tobasco sauce but it ended up going in the bin.

After some grocery shopping and errand running, it was time for afternoon tea. On a mini pana di casa vienna roll from Bakers Delight, I layered thinly sliced strips of prosciutto, sliced roma tomato and sliced bocconcini. I drizzled a bit of olive oil over, cracked some black pepper and popped it into the oven for about ten minutes until the cheese has melted.

Garnish with fresh basil leaves from the garden...

and then it heads to my mouth.

Dinner
Cajun roasted Chicken Thigh with a warm Vegetable Salad and Cous Cous

I roasted some pumpkin and a bulb of garlic, halved, in the oven with some olive oil, balsamic vinegar, sea salt and cracked black pepper. I steamed the beans and then tossed them through the other vegetables. I toasted some pinenuts and added these too. Great to eat as it is but I also made some cous cous and mixed that through the vegetables.

The cloves of garlic were cooked perfectly! I am going to smell like garlic at work tomorrow after having some of this for lunch!
