ATRIUM at CROWN PERTH

A highly anticipated brunch with the ladies!

We arrived early and were pleasantly surprised to be seated in a little private room just off the main dining area. It gave us a bit more room and we didn't have to worry about the diners around us and let loose the chatter and laughter.

The food was great! Nice and fresh, with a huge selection. I headed straight for the seafood!

Round 1

The cockles were gorgeous! We agreed that they must be cooked in some olive oil with very simple flavours of garlic and sundried tomato with some herbs. Delish! The oysters were also very fresh. I tried to fish out the ones that sat on the bottom or that were covered in ice.

Round 2

The Dim Sum morsels left alot to be desired, unfortunately. I was really disappointed with the har gow. It was all pastry with hardly any prawn meat inside. I think out of all the food, the dim sum was the least impressive. It didn't even look appealing. It looked worse (and tasted) than some of the cheapest places in Perth that I've been to.

Round 3

As the morning wore on, some of the dishes were being replaced by the lunch menu. The Peking Duck was soooo good! Tender, juicy pieces of duck!

Round 4

I went back for a few more rounds of the cockles and smoked salmon. Yum! They would be awesome with some pasta. Too bad most of us had somewhere to go for lunch otherwise we could have stayed there until 2pm eating our way through brunch to lunch. For $59 and 5 hours of eating, that's not bad value. Ooh, and champagne is included! Too bad I had to drive =/ so I only had a few.

Dessert!

I actually enjoyed the desserts this time. In the past I've found them all bland and lacking in flavour and texture. Today the chocolate mousse was a dark delight and the berries were sweet and delicious! I actually ate all these on my plate!

We celebrated Ling's birthday tonight at a restaurant I've already dined at this week. The food was awesome so I was looking forward to it muchly!

NINE FINE FOOD
227 Bulwer Street, Highgate

I chose the sashimi special for my first course tonight.

Meng ordered the foie gras mousse with black tobiko, which we thought was fancy for him...
until we realised he didn't actually know what he was ordering! hee hee!

We had the four course set menu tonight, so my second course was the beef tataki.

For mains, I had another dish on the specials menu. A selection of seafood.

Dessert was the black bean ice cream with nuts.

We all brought drinks tonight - sake and bottles of red wine - to aid us in drinking and being merry!

MODO MIO CUCINA ITALIANA
Burswood Entertainment Complex

I really enjoyed my first visit to this restaurant back in May and so was looking forward to eating here again tonight!

Beef Carpaccio

Roasted Duck Breast
with sauteed Spinach, Raisins, Pine Nuts,
Mushroom, Foie Gras and an Apple and Cherry Sauce

Crème Brûlée
with a Pear poached in Saffron and Pinot Grigio and Blood Orange Sorbet

Again, the food was absolutely delicious! I ordered a bottle of Italian red wine to wash it all down with. Yep, a whole bottle of wine to myself. What's new!?

Friday 11th May 2012

I visited an Indian store in Cannington today to get some paneer for a curry that I need to make tomorrow night.

On the way out, the girl asked me "Is there anything else you need?"

I replied, "No, I think that's it."

She must have seen me glancing at the pie warmer because she then asked, "Would you like to try one of those samosas?"

I thought for a few seconds and said, "Sure, why not! Actually, I'll take two of them!"

I ate one as soon as I got home...they were divine! They were filled with potato and peas. They were so deliciously spicy!

We were watching Mary Poppins tonight and booked in for dinner here first. The restaurant has replaced Victoria Station and I'm hoping I enjoy the food because the last time I was at Victoria Station, it was terrible!

Entree: Beef Carpaccio

This was absolutely gorgeous! I have been craving carpaccio for a while now...in fact, I have been craving raw beef dishes since I had that awesome steak tartare in Singapore. This dish did not disappoint!

Main: Barramundi

The fish was cooked well. The little pancake thing on top was a bit weird, I would have preferred some more vegetables but the broccoli underneath the fish sufficed. The puree was great too...though I don't remember what it was! Broccoli!?

I think the beef carpaccio won hands down though!

Saturday 24th March 2012

I have discovered an awesome place for sushi at Westfield Carousel Shopping Centre - Sushi Sushi!

They have a great range of prepackaged sushi, sashimi and individual pieces and rolls. They look very fresh and you can see the sushi chefs making them behind the display. The prices aren't bad either!

ATRIUM BUFFET
Burswood Entertainment Complex

Tonight we went for dinner at the newly refurbished Atrium. Yes, it's been a while since they reopened but tonight is the first time for me to go since then. I have heard the revamped buffet is good and I have been really keen to try it!

Round One

Round Two

Round Three - Peking Duck (we shared these!)

We got one of every kind of dessert to share.

I have to say, we were rather disappointed with the sweets.
Nothing tasted great. The mousse was bland. The profiteroles weren't that great.
Not happy with the quality of the desserts at all!

We made ourselves a cheese platter to share.

Overall, loved the buffet. It's a pity that we could only get a reservation during the first seating so we felt really rushed. The staff began setting the tables for the next seating while we were still trying to just enjoy the rest of our wine. It was even worse when they started vacuuming around us. We understand that we need to be out by a certain time for the next dinner seating, but we all ended up in a massive queue to pay our bill when we could have enjoyed another fifteen minutes or so sipping our wine. Perhaps they should look into allowing people to settle their bills at the table so that they can just simply walk out of the restaurant when they're done.

Oh, and I broke out in hives later that night from all the prawns that I ate hee hee - when will I learn!?

the IMP
863 Albany Highway, East Victoria Park

We went out for dinner tonight to celebrate Ling's birthday. This cute, cosy little cafe serves tapas and we got there early, hoping to get a table since they don't take reservations.

We didn't take long to peruse the menu and decide on what we wanted. They had individual tapas available as well as a tapas platter with meats and a vegetarian platter option.

Photos are not that great because I couldn't use my flash (because it smokes!)...I really should get around to buying a new camera!

Pork Belly

Lamb Cutlets

Vegetarian Tapas Platter

The baking paper bag in the centre of the platter contained a mixture
of mushrooms that were baked in the oven. Yum!

Meat Tapas Platter

The pork belly and lamb cutlets were gorgeous and cooked to absolute perfection! The accompaniments with them were flavours matched in heaven.

The only thing disappointing with our meal was the chorizo. It was overcooked!

Before we even sat down, I glanced at the dessert display and noticed that there was only one crumble remaining so I asked them to keep it aside for me! They did bring out a tray of freshly made crumbles during our dinner but it doesn't hurt to think ahead!

Berry Crumble

Sticky Date Pudding

We completed the night with lots of wine and karaoke!

GREENHOUSE
100 St. Georges Terrace, Perth CBD

I have heard all good things about this little restaurant in the heart of the Perth CBD and have been eager to dine here. I caught up with a girlfriend for lunch and was instantly in awe at the design and chic-organic ambience.

Angus Beef with Romesco Sauce & Summer Vegetables - $24

The steak was perfectly cooked, the vegetables were cooked just a little under so they retained a bit of crunch and freshness. The sauce was a bit of an odd flavour to go with the steak. I would have preferred a mushroom or pepper sauce, or perhaps just a drizzle of olive infused with herbs to keep with the 'fresh' feel of the dish.

Strawberry & Yoghurt Fool with Meringue & Pistachio - $14

The dessert was fantastic! A nice, light strawberry yoghurt mousse with crumbled bits of meringue and pistachio. The fresh strawberries around the bowl were nice and sweet. A perfect summer dish.

I would love to try the cocktails here one evening!

After grocery shopping, it was nearing 5pm and the shops were beginning to close. I managed to grab two Cornjacks for half price - bargain!

Oh, how I love thee, Cornjack!

After the late afternoon snack of Cornjacks, I skipped dinner and went to Noel and Fleurette's place for drinks and nibblies. I rummaged around in the fridge and pantry for an assortment of things that we put together.

Camembert, Avocado, Pickled Chillies and fresh Bread

Herring in Hot Sauce

Ooh, the herring was awesome with a slice of fresh tomato, chilli and basil!

We also had Tomato, Cherry Bocconcini and Basil

A day of relatively healthy foods!

THE WITCHES CAULDRON
89 Rokeby Road, Subiaco

Vince and I treated ourselves today for lunch to celebrate his birthday. He hasn't been to the Witches Cauldron before.

We went and had the two course business lunch special for $39 each.

These are the entrees we had:

Vince: Chilli Squid

Myself: Deep fried Camembert

Oh my gosh these were sooo moreish!! The cheese was soft and gooey inside the crusty crumb shell. Definitely would go well with a large glass of red.

I would have been full after just the entree. There was a little side of thinly sliced garlic bread and some fresh salad with a really delicious vinegrette dressing.

For our mains we had:

Vince: Lamb Fillet

Myself: Warm Mushroom Salad

This was far too much for me to eat. yes, it's a huge bowl of several different varieties of mushrooms, half an avocado and salad. The entrees appeared to be nicely presented whereas the main courses looked like they were thrown together rather haphazardly. Certainly not the level of presentation you'd expect in a fine dining restaurant.

In hindsight, I probably should have just ordered their reknowned garlic prawns and perhaps would have been able to finish that. Next time perhaps!

Dinner
Ham & Pasta Soup

A hearty soup with diced ham, onion, garlic, celery, leek and carrots.

Saturday 24th July 2010

Sorry everyone! I'm recovering from four days of head-splitting migraines so I haven't been online much this past week and all the blogging (as well as bill paying and job seeking) has been postponed. Let's hope I'm on the road to recovery and can avoid those nasty migraines for a while.

BISTRO FELIX
118-120 Rokeby Road, Subiaco

To celebrate Ling's birthday tonight, we went out for dinner. Let's face it, no celebration of ours is complete if it doesn't involve food.

I've been walking past this restaurant everyday on my way to and from work and have been eagerly anticipating dining here. It always seems to be well set up inside, with all the tables elegantly set up for dinner service, complete with the cutlery, napkins and wine glasses. There always seem to be a gathering of people in there enjoying an after work drink.

The tables were really close to each other with little room to move between them. I suppose being packed in tightly and the lighting and music helped to create a cosy ambience. The waitresses appeared to be attentive and were good with refilling our water glasses and topping up our wine glasses.

We ordered entrees to begin with:

Shallen: Grilled Rottnest Island scallops on the half shell
2 x with sea salt and extra virgin olive oil
2 x with corn and pequillo pepper - $4.8 each

Meng: Tea smoked quail with raddichio, muscatel and almond
with a carrot and caraway jus - $20
Food Styling by Meng.

Ling, Kong & Myself: the daily charcuterie plate
with Lescure butter and walnut bread - $28
This included pork terrine, duck carpaccio and a delicious pate.

After our entrees, we were brought a palette cleanser - Bay Leaf & Lime Sorbet

For our mains:

Shallen: Barramundi with mixed leaves & vinaigrette - $32

Ling & Myself: Slow braised ox cheek with parsnip, apple & Cêpes crumb - $35

We all had a good chuckle that Meng came slightly under dressed in his Batman T-shirt!

Meng: Duck breast with puy lentils, girolle and beetroot
and an orange and anise sauce - $39

Kong: Rack of dorper lamb with Lancashire potatoes,
beetroot puree and roasted brussels - $41

We were all quite content with our meals. Meng shied away from the lentils on his dish though, so I think he was still hungry afterwards.

Overall, a pleasant dining experience!

THE IMP
863 Albany Highway, Victoria Park

We drove here for coffee and dessert.

Ling had the chocolate brownie - it was a huge slab about 10cm x 10cm!!
I honestly don't know how he managed to eat it all.

Shallen had a sticky date pudding.

I indulged in a rhubarb and apple crumble.
It was pretty much a bowl of cream, stewed rhubarb and apple,
and a crunchy layer of crumble over the top.

A really good night was had by us all, but it shows we're getting old when we're all ready to call it a night before midnight!
