Supper
Mum's Pork Liver Soup

Friday 22nd June 2012

Tonight I went to Mum's and helped her make Chinese Rice Dumplings. It's a tradition to make these rice dumplings once a year. I don't know what it is in celebration of and I'm too lazy to google it, but I do look forward to eating these every year!

I remember trying to help Mum wrap the dumplings many years ago but I only attempted a few and have been wanting to help her with them since but I've always been working or out when she decides to make them. They take an evening of preparation, then wrapping and then boiling.

It was rather enjoyable sitting there in the kitchen learning how to do them. I don't think Mum is ready to part with her recipe for cooking the separate components just yet, but she was rather chuffed that I was taking the time to let her teach me how to wrap the dumplings.

Pork belly, chestnuts, yellow lentils, dried shrimp, shitake mushrooms.

I became rather efficient at wrapping them.

They need to boil for several hours and Mum tells me that about three of them burst in the water...they must have been ones that I did...

WORK LUNCH - PIZZA!

Although we just had lunch yesterday, we had lunch again today.

Why? Because we can!

We used up the leftover pizza bases in the freezer.

Hawaiin!

I went to Mum's for dinner tonight with the lure of pigeon, which I haven't had for...well...since I was a little girl living in Goldsworthy. However, there was a change of plans as Mum couldn't get her hands on any pigeon so she cooked quail instead.

She marinated them in salt, pepper, Asian five spice, etc. She waited until I got there before pan frying them for me. Yum!!

They were cooked perfectly! Soooo juicy and well seasoned!

I ate one - for such a tiny bird there was quite alot of meat and not many bones.

I went home to Mum's for dinner tonight.

Hainanese Chicken Rice!

Friday 9th December 2011

We had dinner at Mum's tonight. She made a simple homecooked meal for us.

Steamed Barramundi with Ginger

Fried 'loo boh sai'

Mum only knows the name of this vegetable in Hainanese and not English. She grows it in the garden and I always think it's a weed but it tastes great! Sort of like sweet potato leaves.

Friday 28th October 2011

Tonight I was on the earlier shift so I was able to go to Mum's for dinner. For the last few days I was looking forward to a large bowl of wantan soup but when I got there, Jocelyn was eating Mum's Hainanese Chicken Rice. Mum was about to make up the wan tan dumplings but I told her not to bother and I tucked into the chicken! There was also a beef stirfry.

Christina had just returned from a short trip to Sydney and Melbourne and she brought out some goodies from Adriano Zumbo's Patisserie for us to enjoy with our coffee.

I forget the name - some sort of Almond Meal cookie. I enjoyed it because it wasn't sweet.

My blueberry plant is fruiting nicely. I picked three ripe blueberries and they were nice and sweet.

Friday 23rd September 2011

I saved a slice of Lemon Tart from yesterday's work lunch.

I was on an earlier shift tonight so I actually was able to go to Mum's for dinner.

One of my most favourite things in the world.

Fish crackers.

Mum brought over a bag for me tonight. Some are hers that she made over ten years ago (you can keep them in storage for yonks!) and some are ones that she bought from someone who makes them.

Mum's taste better.

Dinner at Mum's
Combination Hor Fun

I harvested some fresh chillies from the garden.

Back at home, I pottered around in the kitchen making supper and lunch for tomorrow at work. I halved some cherry tomatoes and roasted them in the oven.

Sunday 26th June 2011

I went home for dinner tonight. Mum made roast pork. Gosh, I love the delicious, crispy crackle!

I love eating roast pork with fresh slices of cucumber for a contrast in texture.

Lunch at Work
Roast Chicken with Cous Cous

Dinner
Instant Ramen with shredded Poached Chicken

Mum had poached a whole chicken to make stock. I love the juicy chicken flesh when she cooks it this way. Especially the skin!

Mum's Shark Fin Soup

After dinner I popped over to Marissa's for a catchup over some coffee and baked goodies.

Sunday 5th June 2011

Each year Mum takes the time to make a traditional Chinese sticky rice dish.

The dish involves alot of preparation.

These bamboo leaves need to be cleaned.

The rice is partially cooked.

Pork Belly, Lentils, Shitake and Chestnuts are prepared separately.

Mum will set up on the floor of the kitchen and sit on a stool to make these dumplings. Just like how they did it traditionally.

It takes practice and a certain amount of skill to wrap these rice dumplings in the leaves. I remember trying once and it was okay, but I would need a bit more practice to make sure that they're wrapped tightly enough for when you steam them.

Mum always makes some without the dried shrimps for me.

Tuesday 31st May 2011

I could eat wan tan soup every night.
