They have ‘all-you-can-eat’ for SD$18.90 (before tax) but both times I’ve been to Sakae Sushi, It’s only for a snack, otherwise I could eat a damn lot for that price!

[1300hrs] We met with David at his workplace nearby – the Adelphi. He drove us to Novena Square and we grabbed a quick bite because it was his lunch break. We went to his favourite place to get burgers on the go.

MOS Burger

David had a burger

[1600hrs] After getting some groceries, David dropped Jocelyn and I off at his apartment so that we could help him prepare food for his little end-of-year party tonight with his work colleagues.

love the balcony!

Anyhoo, I started preparing the meat that Mum had brought over from Perth. I diced it up and marinated it with whatever I could find in David’s spice cupboard. Some olive oil, chopped garlic, cumin, asian five spice, sea salt and pepper. When Jocelyn returned from the gym, she and I sat down to skewer the kebabs. Onion, red and yellow capsicum, and the marinated beef.

With that task out of the way, we got onto the other dishes.

slaving away in the kitchen

cheese & bacon potatoes
roasted pumpkin, sweet potato, zucchini, onion & whole garlic cloves
grilled eggplant, zucchini & mushrooms

Jocelyn worked on the fruit platters

By the time all this was close to being done, David arrived home from work and came to give us a hand. He pulled the turkey out of its box (that I had removed from the fridge and placed on the floor) and I began to panic when I saw it was a whole turkey. Yes, a whole turkey that needed at least one and a half hours in the oven to reheat and his guests were due in half an hour’s time. *EEP!*

I followed the instructions, whacked the turkey straight into the oven and went to shower. Fingers crossed!

As the guests arrived, Jocelyn started serving food. David had found some aprons for us to wear for the occasion and we had both lunged for the same apron but Jocelyn got to wear it. We’d put some effort into the presentation, using baby butterhead lettuce to garnish most of the plates. I had an awesome time - it felt like I was back at home in the kitchen, preparing for a little get-together with my friends.

one of David’s friends brought home-made salmon gravlax

David’s friends also brought homemade cake and chocolates

Just before the turkey was due to come out of the oven, I heated the gravy and stuffing separately. Cooking a turkey from scratch is one thing, reheating one from the fridge is another. Instead of worrying if the turkey was cooked all the way through, I was worried that it might still be cold in the middle. I was able to breath easy…the turkey turned out just fine!

Whee…I have to say, I’m rather proud of myself – I’ve roasted whole chickens before but this is my first time doing a 5kg turkey! *takes a bow*

After dinner, David’s friend, also named David Lim, kept us entertained for hours playing the piano. He’s a concert pianist and he is incredibly awesome!! A few of his original pieces moves me to tears. Just beautiful.

Fantastic night! Jocelyn and I had heaps of fun playing house today =)

[0130hrs] After getting back to Aunty’s place, I couldn’t resist snacking on one of the turkey drumsticks before bed - hee hee
