Steak with a Mushroom, Chilli & Chives Butter
After this quick lunch, Jocelyn and I grabbed everything we needed and went to Kong's place to decorate Christina's birthday cake so that it could be a surprise. I'd baked two square chocolate cakes last night. The secret - White Wings - I believe it's the 'Choc on Choc' range. It comes with frosting and all you need to do is add water and butter to the prepacked dry ingredients.
We whipped some cream and smothered one piece of cake with it and put the second piece of cake on top. We made up the chocolate frosting and spread this carefully all over the cake so as not to smudge the cream filling. when we were happy that all the cake was covered, we set about with the fun bit!
We used snowballs as 'mountains' to signify the ski slopes in Canada that she will no doubt encounter during her time there. A few Maltesers, some apple gummies on toothpicks for trees. I found a few little plastic baby figurines at one of the cake decorating stores and they're made in the perfect position to represent skiiers. Jocelyn cut little strips of lollies for the skis and I dug some toothpicks into the cake for the ski poles.
We put the sugarpaste figurine I'd made on the board on top of two Kit Kats that represent skis. We drew in a 'road' with some chocolate frosting. What do you think!? Should I become a cake decorator!? I'll take orders at least a few weeks in advance. ha ha
Back at home, Jocelyn and I helped out in the kitchen with a few last minute preparations. When I suggested that Jocelyn prepare the fruit platter, she remembered her experience with the fruit platter at our cousin's dinner party in Singapore and refused. I started cutting the fruit and so she decided to have another go and she did a really good job with the layout of the fruit on the platter. She was very happy with her work!
The BBQ went along smoothly...people were getting into the cocktails and loved the food Mum had slaved away in the kitchen all day to prepare. We had the usual - fried bee hoon; fried Hokkien noodles; chicken curry with steamed rice; assorted sushi; homemade curry puffs; potato salad; Greek salad; canape crackers; and a fruit platter.
Just as the party was starting to gather momentum after everyone was fed and ready to mingle and drink, Kong and I had to leave to make our next engagement.
We met up with everyone else for karaoke at Utopia on Canning Highway, Melville. With no time to lose, we got stuck into the drinking and singing. A great night was had by all! I shall have to get some photos from everyone else to post here.
The ended with us grabbing Maccas on the way home.
