Singapore Day 19

[1100hrs] This morning I decided to have my yong tau foo at Lot 1 with a twist.

yong tau foo with curry gravy sauce – SD$4.80

The sauce is similar to a laksa sauce. Yum! It was like eating yong tau foo and laksa at the same time!

... Lucky’s also asleep

[1400hrs] Jocelyn and I caught the MRT to Bugis, which is the stop we need to get off at to get to the hotel where we’re having our high tea this afternoon.

Intercontinental Hotel Lobby Lounge

Jocelyn has always wanted to have a tier-style English high tea. So, we turned down the buffet high tea upstairs for the English high tea in the ‘lobby lounge’. The high tea comes with tea coffee, iced tea and iced coffee. This was perfect – Jocelyn had iced tea while I had hot Earlgrey and a glass of champers.

G.H, Mumm Codon Rouge, France – SD$25.00
Citrus hints and rich fruit aromas of white peach and apricot.
These lengthen into notes of vanilla, dried fruits and honey.

Tier One
mini pizzas
mini chicken & mushroom pies
salad

Tier Two - sandwiches
salmon & lettuce
ham & gherkin
roast chicken & cucumber

Tier Three - sweets
fruit scones with jam & cream
chocolate puddings with cream sauce
muffins

Tier Four - more sweets!
I didn’t eat any so I don’t know what they are!

The high tea set us back SD$45 – the buffet was only SD$33.

we got a bit silly...

look how much butter they put in the sandwiches

Jocelyn and I both only like to eat the savoury items so we asked to take the sweets home (both tiers three and four). Jocelyn asked for a ‘doggy bag’, but of course the waitress was unfamiliar with that term, so we had to elaborate that we wanted to take the cakes home. The staff were happy to oblige, but I had to sign a disclaimer form before I could take the food off the premises - he he.

[1530hrs] After tea, we split up and I went for a quick stroll through the Bugis street markets.

Hello, Mr Jackfruit!

I love wandering around all the stalls that sell dried foods, herbs and spices

There were the usual market stalls selling clothing, souvenirs, Oriental lanterns and decorations for the upcoming Chinese New Year. I also walked past the temple and was delighted by a Japanese busking group singing a well-known Chinese song (in Japanese of course). I guess you could say they looked Japanese-Jamaican! I stopped to listen for a while, took a photo of them, threw them a $2 note and a smile, and the female singer broke from her lyrics to say ‘arigatoo’ and nodded at me.

Seeing all the red and orange paper lanterns reminded me of how a few of my Uncles used to run craft stores selling such items. When younger, we used to spend time at their stores helping out for a day. I always loved to see what the latest craft craze was and I’d always take some supplies home with me. With all the craft supplies I have at home right now, I could open up my own craft stall!

[1800hrs]Jocelyn and I met up and went to dinner at the Bugis Food Junction. As you may remember, the last time I was here, I ordered my favourite beef noodles, but I accidentally ordered the dish without noodles! So, this time I made sure I ordered correctly.

BEEF NOODLE SOUP

Afterwards, we walked around on the basement level where all the food is!

We stopped at a dried foods store and they had free testers. I tried some of the dried fruits and fell in love with them!

kiwi
strawberry
Thailand mango

I spotted a stall selling SHARK FIN SOUP!! I bought a few bowls takeaway for a late night snack.

[2300hrs] Before bed, I reheated the shark fin soup – it was delicious!!

SD$2.80 – can you believe how cheap it is!??
