Sunday 5th December 2010

Today is the last day of the abalone season in Perth. I was one of the many keen people to get up early and flock to the Perth shores to spend an hour fishing for these little delicacies.

I didn't go into the water as I don't have a license to catch the abalone, but I watched from the shore as the guys braved the cold water between 7am to 8am. In this hour, each person is allowed to catch twenty abalones of legal size.

In the last few moments leading up to 8am, I went to dip my feet in the water and saw a fluoro green netting bag floating in the shallow water. I thought I had better fish it out to throw in the bin, but when I lifted it out of the water, I discovered there were several abalone in there! I looked around, expecting a frantic Asian rushing up to snatch their haul from me, but no one was paying the slightest bit of attention to me.

So, I did what any abalone loving person would do. I happily added the abalone I found to our haul. Yes, technically I didn't have a license, but one of the guys lost their haul so I suppose it's the ocean's way of give and take.

Back at Benoit's place, he and Ivy removed the abalone from the shells and then I cleaned them up with a toothbrush. I have never seen abalone in the shell before but have eaten plenty of it. Dad and my cousins go each year to catch these little creatures and either Mum or Dad clean them. So, while I've seen them standing over the kitchen sink scrubbing away at them, I haven't actually prepared them myself. There's always a first for everything!

I think we did a pretty good job at cleaning and preparing them!

We sliced a few and I cooked them in a stirfry with snow peas, carrots, shitake mushrooms, garlic, spring onions, soy sauce and oyster sauce.

Rehydrating the shitake mushrooms.

Benoit got busy preparing some pancakes to go with our Peking Duck. The pancakes are supposed to be steamed but we panfried them.

Benoit removed all the meat from the Duck.

I diced up all the ingredients for Benoit's san choy bow filling. Shitake mushrooms, waterchestnuts, bamboo shoots, carrots, coriander, spring onions and garlic.

In my haste, I put the san choy bow filling on the pancake
that's supposed to be for the Peking Duck!

Oops, forgot the piece of delicious Duck skin!

Mmmmm

There's no denying that food tastes better when you've gone to the trouble of catching, cleaning and preparing it. Sure, you might be exhausted by the time you flop into your chair, but it's all worth it.

At home, I felt like some soup - Pork & Pasta Soup with Vegetables

I bought this new cheese grater that is soooo easy to use!

You pop a block of cheese into the chamber, turn the handle and voila!

Lunch at Work
Salad with Tuna & Lima Beans

After work I went to Benoit and Ivy's place. Benoit's dad was in the kitchen and as usual, I was eager to eat what he was cooking!

Battered bread with a Tomato Salsa

I polished off a bag of pork fat crackles - yes I did. I washed it down with a beer and then we headed off to a birthday party, where I gorged myself on fish crackers. I ate so much! I suppose I was so hungry because I only ate salad for lunch.

It was a typical Asian party with some of my favourite dishes.

Satay!
Fish Crackers
Sushi

Ivy found a fish cracker with a hole in it in the shape of a heart.

Friday 3rd December 2010

It hasn't taken me long to infiltrate my new job with my love for eating. It helps that everyone at work loves to eat too. So, without too much effort, we have started what we hope will become a weekly event - we shall collect a small fee from everyone and either on Thursday or Friday each week, one of us will go and shop for a smorgasbord of food for us to all share.

Behold - our feast!

This was the quiche I made last night, which we all tucked into for morning tea. I was disappointed that the pastry was a bit undercooked on the base. I should have blind baked it a bit longer.

Prosciutto
Rivergum Ham
Olives, Sundried Tomatoes & Fetta
Duck Terrine

More of Ian's Harissa paste, fresh avocado and fresh sliced bread.

Rebecca brought in some Brie.

She was so eager, she didn't realise she was making her sandwich
on one of the plastic bags that the food arrived in!

I made two sandwiches. It took me several laps around the table to be able to get a bit of all the ingredients, much to everyone's amusement. On the left, avocado, brie, ham and duck terrine. On the right, harissa, prosciutto and sundried tomatoes.

For something sweet, we had some of Rebecca's lemon butter with fresh strawberries. This combination was divine! You get the tartness of the lemon butter with the sweetness of the very ripe strawberries. I must get her recipe to make this lemon butter when my lemons are ripe!

With our tummies full, we beamed at each other - it was an extremely successful lunch! Can't wait for next week!

Tonight I had Vernon and Victoria over for dinner. Vernon saw one of my blog posts and so he 'ordered' this for tonight. I was happy to oblige.

Thursday 2nd December 2010

I love cheese.

Especially soft cheeses.

I bought this one from a store in Subiaco and shared it with my cheese loving work colleagues.

Tarago River Cheese Company's 'Jensen's Red' - $64/kg

I loved the saltiness of this cheese. It would be absolutely perfect with a glass of red to wash it down. I am going to have to remember the name for next time!

After work, I set about making a quiche for work tomorrow. Firstly, I blind baked a sheet of shortcrust pastry in a shallow dish.

I used diced ham and chopped sundried tomatoes. I combined some cream, milk, grated cheese, a couple of eggs and some cracked black pepper and poured that in.

Always one to multitask, I made dinner at the same time as I prepared the quiche.

Dinner

I worked a half shift today so drove into Subiaco to catch up with Vince for lunch.

Lunch
Harissa Chicken Salad

I used the leftover harissa chicken I made the other night, lettuce, cherry tomatoes and asparagus with dressing made from the pan juices after roasting the chicken. We are going to have to get Ian to make us more of his harissa paste! It's so versatile!

Tonight I busied myself cleaning, deseeding and stuffing these green chillies with fish paste. They will go into the freezer and be readily available for noodle soups and steamboat.

Dinner
Yong Tau Foo Bee Hoon Soup

Tuesday 29th November 2010

Using the rest of the harissa paste that I got from a colleague at work, I made this delicious tomato sauce with onion, garlic, celery and leek. Once the sauce had simmered down, I added some seafood.

Spaghetti with Seafood in a Rich Tomato Sauce

The sauce was so rich and had such a depth of flavour. Delicious!
