Diary of a House-Sitter: DAY TWO

Today I called in sick for work, popped some cold and flu tablets and rolled over in bed. At noon, I crawled out of bed and went on the hunt for food in the kitchen. There was some left over soup from last night so I threw in some prawns from the freezer and bee hoon and made noodle soup for lunch. Not much else I could eat with my throat feeling like sandpaper.

I drank hot tea for most of the day. The tea cannister was empty, so I washed it out before refilling it. I love these cannisters that my mum's had for as long as I can remember. When I as young, Mum used to get me to fill it up with teabags when it was empty. It was one of those chores that fell to my responsibility. I quite enjoyed it. Mum showed me how to put the teabags in so that I could maximase the space and be able to fit as many teabags as I could. The cannisters came in a set - I think there are four altogether. They're in different sizes and the larger ones are in the pantry for keeping flour, sugar etc.

I had dinner at home too. My mum seasoned some rump steak, which I pan fried. I reheated some mashed potato I found in the fridge and quickly sauteed some spinach and mushrooms to go with the steak.

After dinner, I left to head to my friend's house to stay the night. I put the TV on loud so I could hear it while I was in the kitchen. I found a partially used lemon in the fridge so I squeezed the juice out, found some honey in the pantry, and made some honey lemon tea.

I did an inventory check of the fridge - there were some fresh vegetables that I needed to use up before they went bad and were wasted before my friends got back from their trip. I decided to make a vegetable bake.

tomato
zucchini
eggplant
mushrooms
spinach from their garden

I sliced up the zucchini, eggplant and mushrooms. I then fried the zucchini and eggplant with a touch of olive oil on the sandwich toaster. I arranged the vegetables in layers in a baking dish, also using some eggplant pasta sauce I found in the pantry. I found some grated pizza cheese in the fridge and used it to top off the dish before putting it into the oven to bake.

I picked some fresh baby cos leaves from the garden and tore these up with the remainder of the spinach leaves and made some salads with diced tomato and a can of tuna I brought from home. I packed them into takeaway containers to take to work over the next few days.

I watched TV until the vegetable bake was ready, then had some for supper.

My first night sleeping alone in this house...I was freaked out! Firstly, there was a clock in my room that ticked loudly so I ended up having to move it into the next room. There were the usual sounds a house makes at night when it's quiet, but being all by myself, they kept me awake for some time and I started getting paranoid. I had to get up and peep through the blinds several times to make sure there weren't any intruders sneaking around outside the house. Eventually it started to rain steadily so that drowned out all the sounds and I finally fell asleep.
