Tonight after work I caught up with some friends for coffee in Leederville.

Benoit's Baked Ricotta Cheesecake and my Chocolate Brownie.

At home, I made some bee hoon soup. I have to make the most of these cold chilly nights because when summer arrives, it'll be hot to sit in my room eating a big steaming bowl of noodle soup. Unless I have the air conditioner on...

Supper
Bee Hoon Soup with Beef Balls,
beansprouts, red onion, stuffed chillies, wombok & spring onion

I made the stock using half a beef stock cube and soy sauce. Yum! I need to make bun bo hue sometime soon...I'm craving it!

Dinner at Work
Moussaka

This is the moussaka I made on Friday - with eggplant, zucchini, and mushrooms. It definitely is going on my list of favourites.

One of the crabs residing in Benoit's tank.

Mum's Chicken Wings

I love how Mum seasons the chicken before roasting them in the Turbo. It must be a mixture of soy sauce and some other Asian sauces and spices. The skin is always so crisp and absorbs all the flavours. Alot of the times the skin actually looks like it's burnt because it's black but I know better. The darker the skin in, the crunchier and more delicious it is!

I visited the Wanneroo Markets again this Sunday to get some fruit and vegetables with Benoit and Ivy for dinner. Most of it was already prepared by his dad so we had a really lazy Sunday.

Mashed Potato & Chicken Bake

Spring Rolls

Pork Sausages, Spring Rolls, Potato & Chicken Bake

Benoit wanted dessert. Sarena had to make the dessert.

Fortunately, it was one of those premix cakes. I just had to follow the instructions to add water, vegetable oil and egg, beat the mixture and then bake it.

chocolate cake!

Ben later spread the frosting and sprinkled coconut over it.

Today I slept in until about noon and felt much better than I have in the past few days. I visited the pet shop to get my water tested and Alas! the phosphate levels were just as high as they were before I put in the phos-carb stuff to remove the phosphates. No wonder my plants are growing so well!

Tonight I drove out to Mt Lawley for a friend's birthday dinner.

SAVINI CAFE PIZZERIA
80 Walcott Street, Mount Lawley

I quite liked the inside decor of this place. It was warm and had a cosy atmosphere. The smells from the kitchen were rather inviting too. In the warmer weather, they open up the alfresco area but tonight they had it all closed up to contain the heat.

The service was a bit slow - the waiter looked after the 'boys' table first and it was about twenty minutes before he even approached the 'girls' table to see if we were ready to order. Jenn and I ordered food to share since we couldn't make up our minds. The other girls on the table ordered some bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar while Jenn and I shared some oysters.

Entree: Oysters Kilpatrick

These were absolutely divine! I haven't had oysters Kilpatrick for such a long time because I've had the pleasure of being able to get fresh oysters to enjoy naturale style. These oysters were beautiful though. They would have been fantastic natural with a squeeze of lemon juice.

Mains:

Portobello Mushrooms with Pumpkin & Baby Spinach Salad

Seafood Platter

Our meals took over an hour to arrive. The guys had received their main courses and polished them off before we even got ours. The waiter was aware of our grumbling stomachs but, speaking from my own experience as a waitress years ago, of course there is not much he can do but placate us with his wit, words and whether we wanted another drink while we waited.

When our meals finally arrived, Jenn and I were pleased with our choices. The mushrooms and salad were delicious! We ordered an entree size to share between us, but I could have easily eaten a main course size myself! The seafood platter was also good - they were generous with the seafood. There was a bowl of mussels, scallops, salmon, prawns, calamari and antipasto of pickled vegetables.

The scallops were absolutely fantastic! Plump little succulent pieces of scallop - they were the highlight of the platter for me. The calamari was quite good too but the flavours in the crumb mixture were foreign to me. Between Jenn and I, we couldn't figure out what the spices and herbs were...strange flavour. The mussels were cooked just right but the sauce was rather lacking in any real flavour.

Overall, the oysters and the mushroom salad came to the rescue and we felt rather satisfied with our meal. I'm sure if I had not been driving and were able to drink more wine, I wouldn't have minded the long wait for the food, but for dinner to take close to four hours without dessert...some of us were rather disappointed with the service and food.

The owner was a really friendly Italian. He greeted everyone personally if he could. Jenn actually thought he was a drunken customer when she arrived.

Last night I took some panadeine forte which is prescription only - powerful stuff. I was prescribed it a few years back when I did my neck in and couldn't move it. Last time I took one and it knocked me out within minutes. I only use it when I have a migraine and before crawling into bed. It must have worked because I slept through most of the night without getting up but in the morning I still felt the hammering pain in the right side of my head. I forced myself to get up and take a cold shower and then got back into bed with Simba.

By the late afternoon, I felt better and decided to get some fresh air. Simba was eager to go for a walk so I took him. It was nice to get outside. The weather's been sunny and warm during the day, but still freezing at night. This could be the reason for my migraine in the first place. I usually get them when the weather changes abruptly. And getting no sleep at night doesn't help.

I spent the evening in the kitchen. I made a moussaka with variations. I layered eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms and lamb mince. I made the moussaka sauce properly according to the recipe this time and the consistency was much creamier and thicker. I also sprinkled some grated tasty cheese over the creamy sauce and baked it in the oven until the juices were bubbling and the cheese had melted and turned a delicious gold.

Just like last time, I saved some of the lamb mince and tomato sauce to make pasta for dinner.

Spaghetti Bolognaise

It seems everyone's in a lethargic mood tonight as we all stayed home tonight. Simba's been napping next to me for the past few hours. He looks so adorable when he sleeps. He's even more adorable when he dreams and starts whimpering, snorting or making other sounds in his sleep.

AARGHH!!!

Here's how my night went:

[1215hrs] Paged by Mercy Hospital to phone someone back. I phoned them and was told 'oh it's ok, it's not urgent.' Grrr

[1230hrs] Paged by SJOG Hospital at Subiaco and had to drive in to work.

[0215hrs] Arrived back home and got back into bed.

[0300hrs] Paged by Hollywood Hospital and had to drive in to work.

[0310hrs] Paged by SJOG Hospital at Subiaco while enroute to Hollywood Hospital so drove to Subiaco to pick up the work and took it to the lab at Hollywood Hospital to run.

[0520hrs] Arrived home, took two panadeines and crawled into bed. I decided if they paged me again, I would have to tell them I couldn't go in since I was doped up on codeine.

So...that's my night out on call. Needless to say, I woke up with a hammering headache and popped a few more panadeines before laying back down in bed. I pretty much slept most of the day away. I called in sick - I could barely even make the call. I came so close to getting my Mum to call for me because everytime I sat up with my phone, I felt the urge to throw up. Throw up what though? I hadn't eaten anything all day.

I finally woke up at 6:30pm and shuffled to the fish tank where I sat there for a while just looking at the fish and resisting the urge to throw up. Whether I could keep it down or not, I had to eat something so that I could take some stronger painkillers.

I had a small bowl of soup and then spent the next half hour back and forth between the toilet and my bed.

Another hour later, I felt well enough to sit up. Mum made me some rice porridge. She made it with spring onions and pieces of chicken. I ate it with some pieces of ham that she cut up for me and some salted preserved beancurd. I don't know why, I just felt like I really needed something salty. I felt a bit better after two bowls - yes it's always a good sign when I regain my appetite. I got back into bed straight after and drifted in and out of sleep.

Simba was such a little darling throughout the day. I remember waking up in the afternoon and feeling some pressure against my side. It turned out to be him, sleeping beside me. He spent the whole night with me to keep me company. Even when Mum called for him to go sit with her while she watched TV, he stayed with me. It's nice to know he cares. He doesn't talk, but he shows that he loves me through his actions.

Lunch at Work
Mum's Lamb Curry with Rice

I love Mum's lamb curry. This time she added carrots - she's never done that before! It was a nice change. The carrots were tender and sweet. I still need to keep working on getting her to make it more spicy though. She's worried that Jocelyn won't eat it if she makes it too spicy, but I'm the one who usually eats most of it.

I still had a headache when I got to work today but for the most part, it had disappeared by the late afernoon. However, after getting a catch-22 thrown at us from management, my headache was back in full swing by the time I got home.

Dinner
Prawn Bee Hoon Soup

I pray that I don't get called out tonight because I really need to sleep this headache off.
