Lunch at Work
Mrs Macs Beef & Mushroom Pie

Tonight I plan on having a platter for an entree and then a scotch fillet steak for main course. Yes, it's all about me this week.

I bought some whole baby squid from the deli section of Woolworths at Carousel today. They've renovated half the store and there is a much better selection at the deli now. The baby squid are already cleaned and prepared, I just have to cut them up the way I want before cooking them. I've been inspired by watching them cook squid on Masterchef and felt like squid. I usually use squid as part of a seafood mixture when I'm making marinara or in a soup or with noodles. However, tonight they are going to be cooked on their own in some butter and chilli flakes.

ok...that's a geeky Star Trek joke =P

Now...I was confused with Masterchef when the chef was showing the contestants how to prepare squid. He told them to score the outside of the squid tubes. I have always scored the inside as my Mum has shown me and she has been doing this for longer than I have been alive. It was interesting that one of the contestants questioned this and the chef reaffirmed that it was the outside that he must score. I put this to the test.

Chilli Squid in Burnt Butter

I scored the outside of my squid and as you can see in the above photo - the verdict is that...

Masterchef was wrong!

The squid curls with the inside facing out when it cooks so you have to score it on the inside if you want the gorgeous pattern to show. *crosses her arms and sticks her nose in the air*

I blanched the asparagus in boiling water for a few minutes and then took them out of the water. I wrapped some strips of pancetta around them, drizzled some olive oil over them and put them in the oven for a few minutes until the pancetta browned. I did the same for the prawns.

Now, I was supposed to have a steak for my main course, but I was so tired (the wine may have had something to do with that!) that I decided to keep the steak for tomorrow night and went to bed.
