SAKURA SUSHI RESTAURANT
Shop 11, Ranford Shopping Centre, 214 Campbell Road, Canning Vale

At Vernon's recommendation, we had dinner here tonight. It's a small little restaurant that probably does more takeaway business than dine in. The first impression was that they had made a good effort to decorate the place with some simple hints of Japan and it was on the 'cutesy' side with little ornaments around the place.

Oh, and our chopstick holders.

The Menus were brand new - did I mention they're pink!? We waiting a while to order and then waited even longer for the food. We entertained ourselves showing off our chopstick skills, but the waitress saw us and must have thought we were able to take out each other's eyes with the pointy ends and rushed over to see if we wanted to order. We stopped playing with the chopsticks.

As a starter, they brought us a basket of prawn crackers. They'd sprinkled some finely cut seaweed over them but we were joking that it was a poor attempt at making the prawn crackers more Japanese.

For starters we shared:

Takoyaki

I love takoyaki! Little balls with octopus inside and smothered in the Japanese mayonnaise and barbecue sauce. And Bonito (very finely slice fish) flakes. I've eaten better. Victoria reckons they're the frozen variety.

Okonomiyaki

This is a savoury pancake. It was nice, but it would have tasted much better if they had fried them a bit more to get the sides crispy. It was just like a soggy potato patty.

For our mains, we ordered separately.

I had the 'Eel Don' with miso soup and salad for an additional $3.50.

Vernon had Chicken Karaage.

Someone became smitten with the Japanese mayonnaise.

Overall, the food was ok. I still think that Yuki in Willetton is better!

We headed home and made dessert.

Vanilla ice cream, frozen mixed berries, crushed chocolate biscuits,
chopped up dark chocolate, mixed berry coulis and grated dark chocolate.

It would have been much better if we had more vanilla ice cream!
