Lunch
Cheesy Roll

Yes, I melted some grated Tasty cheese onto these white bread rolls from Bakers Delight. The bread was sooo light and crumbly after being toasted.

Dinner at Work
Mum's Stirfry Noodles

To be honest, I would have preferred it to just be vegetarian. But Mum dug in the freezer and defrosted some chicken that I had already diced up, and some of my clams (without the shells).

You can see I added a generous helping of the pickled chillies that Ling and Shallen gave me. Yum!!

Supper
Mum's Cabbage, Carrot & Potato Soup

I added some sambal belachan chilli - perfect spicy comfort food.

KOREAN BBQ at Ling & Shallen's

Shallen's been keen on having a Korean style BBQ for as long as I can remember now, but it's neither been the weather for it and it wouldn't have been very comfortable sitting around on the floor of their patio cooking it. So, today's lunch was a surprise introduction of their new outdoor furniture setting and it was beautiful - absolutely perfect - weather for it.

I prepared my marinated meat yesterday before work.

Beef Bulgogi

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp chilli flakes
  • 4 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 small onion, sliced lengthwise along core
  • 500g beef (I used chuck)

    Method:
    1. Slice beef thinly.
    2. Combine with the rest of the ingredients and mix.
    3. Leave for a few hours in fridge to marinate, or overnight if possible.

This morning I woke up and prepared the squid that I had defrosted overnight.

    Squid Bulgogi

    Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 Tspn sesame oil
  • 1 tsp ground white pepper
  • 1 tsp chilli flakes
  • 200g squid

    Method:
    1. Prepare squid by scoring the insides of the tubes, cutting them into small pieces of roughly the same size.
    2. Combine with the rest of the ingredients and marinate for a few hours, or overnight if possible.

Now, I know the squid technically isn't 'bulgogi', but I'm calling it that for lack of a better word and I'm too lazy to google.

    vegies
    Meng's marinated pork
    Ling's marinated chicken
    more vegies
    baby corn spears
    my marinated beef
    my marinated squid
    prawns

    Kim Chi

As soon as the hotplate heated up, we started to throw on food.

We love to watch squid cooking - it squirms!

    A creepy looking tentacle.

I surprisingly felt full rather quickly...must be the weather and the hint of a headache I have - which *alas* meant no beer to accompany my lunch!

Aaah! The aromas of all the differently marinated meats was mouthwateringly divine!

    Dinner at Work
    Creamy Chicken & Mushroom Penne

As you can see, I didn't use very much cream for this so when I reheated it at work, the pasta absorbed most of the sauce and it wasn't gluggy or too heavy.

When I'm on the night shift, I tend to crave sweet sugary things nows. I think it's my body's way of screaming out for more energy to keep up with running around the lab on my own to get everything done.

Arnotts Orange biscuits with a cup of Tea

That's the huge mug I bought from Todai when I was in Las Vegas in 2006. It's like the BEST seafood buffet!! *drool*

    Supper
Vietnamese Noodles with Beef Balls, Tofu, Chillies

    Thursday 15th October '09

    Lunch
    Chips & Gravy

Mum and I shared a large plate after grocery shopping at Centro Maddington. Still can't get used to calling it that...it was Metro Maddington to me for so many years.

    Afternoon Snack
    Ham & Tomato Roll

I bought these bread rolls from Bakers Delight and they are just divine!! The bread is soooo soft when you rip it open. I buttered it and sliced up a roma tomato and placed them between layers of ham. Yum!

    Supper
Instant Ramen with Wantans & Chilli

    Wednesday 14th October '09

    Penne Matriciana

    Ingredients:

  • 1 tspn chilli flakes
  • 1/2 small brown onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 2 rashers bacon, sliced
  • 2 roma tomatoes, diced
  • 1 cup passata (tomato puree)
  • 3 cups penne - cooked al dente

    Method:
    1. In a cold pan, put the onion and bacon. Turn on the heat and cook for a few minutes until onion begins to soften.
    2. Add the garlic and chilli flakes. Cook for a few minutes, adding a splash of water if necessary.
    3. Add the diced tomatoes and passata (and water if necessary) and cook for a few minutes.
    4. Add al dente penne pasta, toss through to coat in the sauce and serve.

    Delicious!

After work, I wearily and hungrily looked for leftovers in the fridge. I found some and heated it up - a huge bowl of one of my favourites!

    Supper
    Mum's Shark Fin Soup

I've been getting stuck back into reading lately and currently I'm working my way through an old classic - The Chronicles of Narnia. I've read 'The Lion, the Which & the Wardrobe' but not the other stories that C.S. Lewis wrote. The language takes me back to my childhood when I used to read like crazy. Beds of heather. Naughty children. Woodlands.
