I woke up and had a slice of my lasagne for breakfast/lunch. Today's photo shows the lasagne holding its shape, whereas in the photo I took last night, the lasagne had flopped all over the place because I had only just taken it out of the oven.

Today was such a beautiful day, I spent most of the afternoon outside pottering about in the garden. When I went outside to check on my plants before heading off to buy some sheep manure with Mum, I saw in shock horror that Simba had managed to push in part of the fencing and dig up one of my tomato plants! There was soil everywhere and my poor tomato plant was lying on its side, roots bare, feeling limp in my hand as I picked it up. I replanted it, watered it carefully and gave Simba a telling off. Hopefully it will make it through. *fingers crossed*

I introduced my new additions that I purchased on the weekend - dill and pineapple sage.

I also bought another 'self-watering' planter box to add to my growing collection of herbs. I planted the dill and pineapple sage in it. Below are my other four planter boxes that my herb garden mainly consists of:

Box 1: Thai basil, purple basil, sweet basil
Box 2: horned honey mustard, mizuna lettuce
Box 3: coriander, garlic chives, chives
Box 4: thyme, oregano, sage

The marjoram I bought had started growing crazy, even when it was still in the seedling tray, so I decided to plant that in the edge of the garden bed where I've transplanted all my tomatos, capsicums and chilli plants.

My garden beds are growing well too!

I finally got around to doing some weeding in the lawn in the backyard. It's Sir Walter lawn that I chose and even there are some weeds popping up, they're really easy to remove and for this being the first time I've weeded the lawn since I had it put in, it's fantastic! It really does deter weed growth. It needs a bit of mowing though, the grass is starting to seed and get long in certain patches. I'll need to get some fertiliser for it before summer kicks in.

After a fantastic day outside in the garden having accomplished alot of work, I finally headed inside to make dinner. Since I had prepared the lamb last night, all that needed to be done was dice some vegetables to roast along with it. I decided on potato, pumpkin and carrots. Drizzle a bit of olive oil and some fresh marjoram from the garden, and into the oven. I diced the vegetables smaller than I usually do so that they wouldn't take as long to cook.

Time for a drink while waiting for dinner to cook! I had bought some kiwi nectar while grocery shopping today so felt like using that. I mixed some vodka with the kiwi nectar, tasted it and decided it wasn't sweet enough. I added some apple juice I found in the fridge and it tasted much better. Garnish with some fresh mandarin slices and blueberries.

Out of the oven

After dinner, I had to make something to take in to work tomorrow for Eileen's birthday morning tea. I got out the spinach and pinenut sausages I bought from Lenards and squeezed out the sausage filling into a bowl. I cut up a few sheets of Antoniou's filo pastry into smaller squared and rolled the sausage filling up in the pastry to make little mini sausage rolls. When I used to work at Lenards, I used to bring some of the spinach and pinenut sausage mix home and we'd make our own sausage rolls using Puff pastry. Yum! I buttered the little rolls and then sprinkled some mixed herbs over them - into the oven until they get that delicious golden brown colour.

I have nights where I feel like doing something hands-on instead of sitting infront of the computer or TV. Tonight I decided to finally get my shoes in order. Earlier this year I bought a storage unit from IKEA to put in our 'foyer' at the front door to store our shoes in so that they would be out of sight and therefore not making a mess being in plain view on a shoe rack by the door. Despite my best efforts, my sisters and Mum still throw their shoes around higgledy-piggledy anywhere and there seems to be an endless amount of sand drifting in with them. *sigh*

Anyhow, I bought some clear plastic shoe boxes not long ago and tonight I finally put them to use. I was amused that because I have small feet (size 5) I was able to store two pairs of shoes in each box - heehee. I could fit perhaps up to four pairs depending on the heel, I reckon!

One for the Italians

Marissa sent me this joke and I just had to post it to my blog!

Italian women are TOUGH!

An elderly Italian man lay dying in his bed. While suffering the agonies of impending death, he suddenly smelled the aroma of his favourite ravioli wafting up the stairs.

He gathered his remaining strength and lifted himself from the bed.

Gripping the railing with both hands, he crawled downstairs.

When he reached the bottom of the stairs, he leaned against the door frame, gazing into the kitchen, where if not for death's agony, he would have thought himself already in heaven, for there, spread out upon waxed paper on the kitchen table were hundreds of his favourite ravioli.

Was it heaven? Or was it one final act of love from his wife of sixty years, seeing to it that he left this world a happy man?

He threw himself towards the table, landing on his knees in a crumpled posture.

His parched lips parted, the wondrous taste of the ravioli was already in his mouth.

With a trembling hand he reached up to the edge of the table, when suddenly he was smacked with a wooden spoon by his wife.

"Va fanculo!" she said. (F*** OFF)

"Questi sono per il funerale." (THESE ARE FOR THE FUNERAL)

*Groan*

Not only did I pay a hefty sum for that bottle of wine last night, but I paid for it again by waking up to a massive hangover today. I stayed in bed until 4pm. Yes...I slept the day away.

Nevermind, once I shook off the hangover it was back to business as usual in the kitchen. I used what was left of Teresa's pasta bake sauce to concoct a lasagne. There wasn't enough sauce so I had to improvise with layers of zucchini. I barely had enough lasagne sheets so I had to use them sparingly. It was a omnivorous lasagne. Teresa's sauce contained not only mince, but mushrooms, carrot and broccoli. So, with my zucchini it was a rather wholesome dish. Into the oven it went.

While the lasagne was baking, I prepared the lamb that is to be tomorrow night's dinner.

First, I processed some garlic, pinenutes, chilli flakes, and fresh sage and thyme from my garden in the processor. This is going to be the 'herb crust' on the lamb.

With the help of some olive oil, I got the mixture to adhere to the lamb. Messy work.

I wrapped each bone with some aluminium foil so that they won't burn in the oven, gladwrapped the dish and put it into the fridge.

Meanwhile, my lasagne was ready to serve.

I had two cups of instant miso soup before bed.

Today I had a run in with one of the senior staff members at work and I was so ready to quit. I won't mention who it was but it's not the first time we've butted heads.

I stopped at the shops on the way home and after getting some groceries, went into the liquor store and searched for a good bottle of wine. I found one, took it to the counter and the guy did a double take when he scanned the price. $42.50 for the wine. I told him I'd had a shit day at work and needed something to make me feel better. He nodded in empathy.

I spent an hour outside in the garden to get some fresh air. I staked all my tomato plants and checked some of the other plants for caterpillar damage. The new product I've been trying seems to be working. It's a natural bacteria that comes in powder form that you rehydrate in water and then spray onto the plants affected. The caterpillar eat the leaves that are sprayed with the bacteria and then they stop eating and die after a few days. It's non-toxic and I think is better in the long run.

Once showered, I headed into the kitchen. I needed comfort food and I needed it fast.

Lots of deepfried shallots, fresh chilli and coriander. The latest episode of Atlantis had finished downloading so that really cheered me up. After dinner, I made myself a little platter.

The drive to work this morning infuriated me. I was literally blowing steam out my ears and nose. Those frackin' cyclists! I got caught behind them on the Causeway, leading onto Riverside Drive. There were about two hundred of them and they were riding in a throng that spanned both lanes. No cars could get past and we were all travelling just under 40k/p/h. Cars were honking their horns (me included) and those cyclists just would not give way. A few years ago I sent an email to the police complaining about them and they basically gave me the run around telling me to contact Main Roads. Main Roads told me to contact Cycling WA. Nothing was resolved but Cycling WA informed me that cyclists are only allowed to ride two abreast on the road. I was so angry, I took my camera out and took some photos so that I had proof. When I got to work, I phoned the police and lodged a complaint but I will have to go in to a station to actually show them the photos I have and to make it a formal complaint. I've had enough. Each time I see the back of my car I'm reminded of the time a cyclist hit my back bumper and rode off with the other hundred or so cyclists he was with. Aargh!

My lunch - Teresa's pasta sauce
I cooked some penne, mixed it through and cut some fresh chillies

After work, I came home to spend a bit of time in the garden. I gathered some cos lettuce - it's grown back really quick since I cut some and gave it to Ling and Shallen. Fleurette came over and we drove to Kong's house to give him some cos lettuce and then went to Bunnings. I bought more plants and now need to find some room in the garden to plant them! I bought some dill, jalapenos, another chilli plant, more celery seedlings and get this - pineapple sage! It smells so deliciously fruity! Can't wait to use it.

For dinner I made a salad using some of the cos lettuce from the garden. I also made a pasta to go with it.

Sazzy's Caesar Salad

  1. Wash cos lettuce and rip into smaller pieces.
  2. Place some bacon and proscuitto in a cold pan and turn the heat on to fry lightly (no need to use oil) - add to the lettuce in a bowl.
  3. Grate or thinly slice some provolone cheese and add to the bowl.
  4. Roughly crush some almonds and add to the bowl.
  5. Add caesar salad dressing and toss through salad.

Caesar salad is usually made using cos lettuce, bacon, croutons and parmesan. I didn't have parmesan so I used provolone. I usually make my own croutons but didn't have time tonight so the crushed almonds gave it a bit of crunch instead.

Clam & Caviar Penne

  1. Fry some bacon and garlic in a pan (no oil).
  2. Add mushrooms and clam meat.
  3. Add some white wine to deglaze the pan.
  4. Toss al dente penne through, adding some olive oil.
  5. Just before turning the heat off, add some salmon caviar and toss through.
  6. Serve with a spoonful of the uncooked caviar and fresh chilli.

Now, the way you cook bacon is to put it into a cold pan and then turn on the heat. As the pan heats up, the oils are drawn out of the bacon so you don't need to add any cooking oil.

This pasta dish turned out soooo well! You get all these different flavours meshing together - the bacon, the clams and the caviar. *drool*

Today I got up and had breakfast/lunch.

Nasi Lemak

My mum made the chilli and fried the little tiny fish. Not sure if they're called ikanbilis but they taste similar.

I took Simba with me to Fleurette's today and we went for a walk around Southern River. Some lovely huge houses being constructed there. Really nice area. After our walk, we set about in the backyard. Fleurette wanted a vegetable garden and being the amateur gardener that I am, I helped her out. Noel popped out a few times to see how we were going. We moved and transplanted some plants before we could mark out the garden bed and then went to Bunnings. We got there with about fifteen minutes before closing time so we got a few things and then headed home.

After a hard day's work in the lovely sunshine, I made a simple dinner.

Doh! I don't want to go to work tomorrow!

This morning Marissa and I woke up to find Teresa wasn't home. She shortly returned with some groceries and set about making a pasta bake to take to the lunch she was going to with Marissa later. Marissa and I made breakfast and we all sat outside to eat. It turned out to be a three course breakfast!

bacon, poached eggs & toasted english muffins
croissants with jam
greek style yoghurt with honey and fresh strawberries

I washed the strawberries with the hose. It's so nice to eat outdoors. I wish I could eat outside at home more often but our patio area is so cluttered with so much crap that I just can't enjoy it. Perhaps now that my vegetables are coming into season, I might be able to sit facing the garden beds.

Teresa's pasta bake

I got some leftover sauce and last night's soup to take home. While Marissa and Teresa were getting ready, I helped them make the dessert they were taking. Teresa had me mash some Philadelphia cream cheese with some caramel sauce and then spread the mixture between two biscuits to make little cookies.

I love how the cream cheese looked like crinkle cut chips when I mashed them

Back at home, I went to pick my first beetroot. Alas! I was expecting big beetroots but there were in fact nothing! Just the little beginnings of a beetroot. I think perhaps the weather was too cold when I planted them in May so I thinned out the seedlings and hopefully I will get some in a few months time. Bummer!

My first tomatoes have appeared

Later in the afternoon I went to Noel and Fleurette's place. Noel's having a LAN all weekend so I intend to keep Fleurette company since she doesn't do the whole geek thing. Sarah joined us and we started watching 'Grease' before getting dropped off at dinner. We had reservations for the Last Drop Brewery Restaurant on Nicholson Road, Canningvale. I've driven past this place many times and always wanted to go in for dinner.

Unfortunately, I left my camera on the kitchen bench at Fleurette's place so no photos. Fleurette took some on her mobile so if I can get them off her, I'll upload them. We shared the seafood platter as an entree - the beer battered fries were delicious!! We had to stop ourselves from polishing them off so that we'd have room for dinner. For our mains I had the sirloin steak with scallops and fetta mash; Sarah the pork ribs with salad; Fleurette the same as me. The dishes were the usual generous portions that you expect when you go for pub food. However, the only thing that disappointed me was that the steaks and scallops were cooked on a burner/grill and all I could taste was charcoal.

Back at Fleurette's, we had a few more drinks and danced around singing along with the rest of the movie. We tried a bit of karaoke but I think I need to get a new power supply for it because the microphone kept blinking out. We then put 'Hairspray' on and I barely was able to make it through the movie. Getting sleepy...I didn't get home until after 3am. Looking forward to our next girly night!
