Saturday 6th March 2010

I grabbed a pie from the bakery at Thornlie Square on the way to work today.

Beef & Mushroom

Nothing to look at, although it did taste ok. I liked the mushroom - it kept its flavour so I could tell there were actual pieces of mushroom in there.

Dinner was leftovers.
Beans & Squid Stirfry with Chilli
Fried Fish with Onions & Soy

After work I grabbed some takeaway from the Moon Cafe on William Street, Northbridge.

Spaghetti Bolognaise

I drove up to Benoit and Ivy's place where I ate my large bowl of pasta, had a beer, and stayed up to watch the soccer.

Late Afternoon Snack at Work
Spinach & Ricotta Roll

Today I headed to the hospital cafeteria (as a last resort because I didn't bring anything substantial for dinner) I was unimpressed with the range of hot foods available. Nearing closing time, there were no chips, the battered fish fillets were a sorry sight; what looked like mushroom pastry tarts were dried out and beyond recognition; a curry stirfry looked like brown mush; and I wasn't up for eating dried out rice on its own. So, I glanced over at the pie warmer and was thankful there was one spinach and ricotta roll sitting there all alone. Waiting for me. I had a craving for one of these a few days ago but all the places where I could think of near work that would sell them were shut. Craving satisfied!

For dinner I had last night's dinner that I didn't have time to eat. A salad of rocket, beetroot and anchovies. Yes...there's not much in my fridge and I'm going on holidays in a few days so I don't want to buy any groceries if I can help it.

Fortunately for me, Benoit and Ivy swung by work to pick up something and they brought me a doggy bag from the dinner they just had. It literally was a doggy bag. They went to Billy lee's in Northbridge, and they had packed the leftovers in a paper bag and tied it up in a plastic bag. The leftovers went nicely with my salad.

Dinner at Work
Battered Pork Cutlets from Billy Lee's
with Rocket, Beetroot & Anchovy Salad

I rushed home after work to cook a quick dinner. It had to be quick because I'm on call tonight. I parboiled some potatoes while I had a shower. Then into the oven with some butter and cajun seasoning. Meanwhile, I cooked some prawns in my little Le Chasseur pot with olive oil, crushed garlic, chilli flakes and a splash of cream.

Supper
Creamy Chilli & Garlic Prawns
with Buttered Cajun roasted Potatoes & Rocket

TUNA MACARONI PASTA BAKE

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups macaroni, cooked al dente in salted boiling water
  • 1 small can of tuna (the sandwich variety)
  • 1 Tbn olive oil
  • 1/2 brown onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 2 Tbn tomato paste
  • 2 Tbn fresh basil (I used flowers)
  • 1/2 cup grated Tasty cheese

    Method:
    1. In a frying pan, heat the olive oil.
    2. Sautee the onions for a minute, then add the garlic and cook for a minute.
    3. Add the tomato paste and then add the tuna and cook for a few minutes.
    4. Stir in the pasta and cook for a minute.
    5. Layer pasta mix in a baking dish and sprinkle the basil over it.

    6. Sprinkle cheese over the top and bake in the oven for about fifteen minutes on 180degrees until the cheese has melted.

    Lunch
    Tuna Macaroni Pasta Bake

I had some friends over for coffee in the evening so I threw together a quick dessert.

    Dessert
Puff Pastry with Mixed Berry Coulis
    dusted with Icing Sugar

    Served with Vanilla Ice Cream!

I was too lazy to make dinner later (dinner for me this whole week has been at about 2am because of the night shift) so I just threw together some snacks.

    Supper
Spam cubes, Goat Fetta, Original Potato Chips
    a Cuppa Tea
  • Tuesday 2nd March 2010

    Lunch
Chilli Salami & Capsicum Spaghetti in Olive Oil, Garlic, Onion, Chilli & Basil

    Dinner
    Mum's Beef Hor Fun

You can have hor fun either dry or wet - yes, har har - but seriously, dry is when you have it just stirfried and wet is when you have it with sauce. I prefer mine with a sauce - usually it's a thick eggy sauce. Mum made it dry style tonight.

I had it with the pickled green chillies that Ling and Shallen gave me.

    **Post Updated**

I thought I had done all the eating I was going to do for the day, but I got hungry later on and made this for supper.

    Supper
Scotch Fillet medium rare with roasted Buttered Potatoes
with a Creamy Mushroom & Green Peppercorn Sauce

Using the pan sauces after cooking the steak, I sauteed some thinly sliced mushrooms, then added some beef stock, green peppercorns and a few tablespoons of cream. Delicious!

    Monday 1st March 2010

We only just broke into the year 2010 not long ago...and suddenly it's March.

Unfortunately for me, I have one of those jobs that requires me to work despite it being a public holiday. Fortunately for me, I have friends that are flexible enough so I can still catch a glimpse of them amid my busy work schedule.

We went for dim sum at the Northbridge Chinese Restaurant,
    Roe Street, Northbridge.

    We waited for a while...
but I finally found a trolley offering chicken feet!

With the outside heat in the high thirties, we sought some reprieve at Icey Ice on William Street, Northbridge.

Benoit and Ivy shared a Mango Shaved Ice dessert.

We drove to Matilda Bay in convoy to laze in the shade.

Of course, we got the nibblies.
    Fish & Chips!

    Giant Ice Cream!

I really didn't want to go to work tonight. It was incredibly busy for a public holiday and I didn't bring any dinner. I went to rummage through my locker and found an emergency can of soup.

    Sunday 28th February 2010

The night shift really takes its toll on you towards the end of the week.

I grabbed a medium Quarter-Pounder value meal on the way.

I have been eating crap all week on the night shifts! Biscuits, chips, instant noodles, chocolate, lollies. Tonight was no different.

I bought these wafer biscuits from Woolworths a few weeks ago and have kept forgetting to try them.

They're tiramisu flavoured wafers and they have
coconut in them which make them so delicious!

After work, I looked through the pantry. Nothing.

I looked in the fridge. Nothing.

Freezer. Nothing that could be defrosted quick enough to satiate my hunger.

I ended up with some chorizo
and kruskits with salmon cream cheese.

Needless to say, I wasn't full. I looked in the pantry again. Aah - one of my favourites that I haven't had in a while. While most of the food on my blog may appear really gourmet and time consuming to cook, I still enjoy the simple things in the pantry.

    Spam

I can eat spam fried or just as it is. Hunger appeased.
