It was such a lovely day today. I really enjoyed eating my lunch in the park while reading my book.

Dinner
Squid Stirfry with Sambal Belachan

Mum says that the season to grow kang kong is drawing near. I can't wait! Kang kong and belachan are a match made in heaven!

I spied this snack at the shops the other day. The name caught my eye.

"Ringer burner"

I'll leave it open for your interpretation...*giggle*

Sunday 3rd October 2010

Tonight I finally got around to making something that I have wanted to try...for yonks.

I absolutely love Hedgehog Slices.

I used to treat myself to them occasionally back in the days of university. But I've always been too lazy to try making them, even when I finally got my hands on a recipe.

A girl I used to work with made them for morning teas and so that alleviated the need for me to make my own. (She also made a gorgeous peppermint slice, which I need to get the recipe for!)

The lady at work who usually bakes a cake for Mondays is on holidays so I thought why not try the hedgehog slice recipe and unleash it on the sweet lovers at work.

The biscuit base.

On goes the chocolate.

A gorgeously smooth layer of chocolate.
Into the fridge it goes to set.

Look at that delicious hedgehog slice!

Dinner
Chicken & Pasta Soup

Jocelyn came home from her Europe trip tonight. I waited in anticipation for her squeal upon entering her room and catching a glimpse of this fake mouse I had strategically placed on her pile of mail.

Breakfast
Instant Ramen with Prawns and Tong Ho

After lunch I caught up with Benoit and Ivy for coffee at Dome in Southern River.

I asked for a soy macchiato with the soy milk on the side.

I got soy milk with the coffee on the side.

I made my own macchiato - nicely layered milk and coffee.

PASAR MALAM 2010
Asian Night Market for Charity

I've seen these Pasar Malam nights advertised over the years but have never had the opportunity to attend one. So, when Ivy sent me the invite last week, I leapt at the chance to go!

We were like wide-eyed kids walking into a food wonderland. There were stalls buzzing with the busy activity of people advertising their wares and delighted customers trying to decide what they wanted. Despite my growling stomach, I managed to do a lap of the stalls circuit before I had to buy a bag of prawns crackers to munch on while we made the tough decisions of what to buy to eat.

We purchased some booklets of $2 coupons from the organisers desk and then went off to decide how best to spend our money. We bought different dishes and then set up the picnic mat to share our food.

Mee Goreng

Jin Deui & Curry Puffs

Steamed Dumplings

Lamb & Chicken Satays

Chilliz Chicken & Rice

Chicken Curry

They sold the curry with 'roti', which turned out not to be actual roti, but rather those wraps that you buy from the supermarkets in the bakery department. They just toasted them so that they were a bit crisp but they lacked the fluffiness to be able to absorb the curry properly.

Rose flavoured Agar Agar

Our feast cost $40 in total. Sure, it was a bit on the pricey side but all proceeds are going towards a charity. Which charity? I do not know...

Benoit's great idea to use the styrofoam
containers to make bowls to eat out of.

It was no surprise that we met some of our friends there. Some of them joined us and they had the curry laksa that I would loved to have tried but it would've been too messy to share.

As the sun set and the night set in, the stalls turned on their portable lights and it looked more and more like the food markets you would find in Malaysia. Not to mention the throng of Asians surrounding us. All in all, a really fun, laid back night.

SAKURA SUSHI RESTAURANT
Shop 11, Ranford Shopping Centre, 214 Campbell Road, Canning Vale

At Vernon's recommendation, we had dinner here tonight. It's a small little restaurant that probably does more takeaway business than dine in. The first impression was that they had made a good effort to decorate the place with some simple hints of Japan and it was on the 'cutesy' side with little ornaments around the place.

Oh, and our chopstick holders.

The Menus were brand new - did I mention they're pink!? We waiting a while to order and then waited even longer for the food. We entertained ourselves showing off our chopstick skills, but the waitress saw us and must have thought we were able to take out each other's eyes with the pointy ends and rushed over to see if we wanted to order. We stopped playing with the chopsticks.

As a starter, they brought us a basket of prawn crackers. They'd sprinkled some finely cut seaweed over them but we were joking that it was a poor attempt at making the prawn crackers more Japanese.

For starters we shared:

Takoyaki

I love takoyaki! Little balls with octopus inside and smothered in the Japanese mayonnaise and barbecue sauce. And Bonito (very finely slice fish) flakes. I've eaten better. Victoria reckons they're the frozen variety.

Okonomiyaki

This is a savoury pancake. It was nice, but it would have tasted much better if they had fried them a bit more to get the sides crispy. It was just like a soggy potato patty.

For our mains, we ordered separately.

I had the 'Eel Don' with miso soup and salad for an additional $3.50.

Vernon had Chicken Karaage.

Someone became smitten with the Japanese mayonnaise.

Overall, the food was ok. I still think that Yuki in Willetton is better!

We headed home and made dessert.

Vanilla ice cream, frozen mixed berries, crushed chocolate biscuits,
chopped up dark chocolate, mixed berry coulis and grated dark chocolate.

It would have been much better if we had more vanilla ice cream!

Creamy Provolone Potato Bake

Tuesday 28th September 2010

After lunch I had a bit of a sweet tooth and so Vince and I went for coffee and cake. I generally don't eat cake nowadays and when I do, I always ask for the tiniest bite size piece. At cafes I'm always seduced by tarts or pies with lots of sweet fruit - usually berries.

Today was no exception. I was instantly attracted to the Rhubarb and Raspberry Pie they had in the cake display.

Vince ordered the Baileys Cheesecake.

I was 'mmm-ing' my way through every single bite of my cake. Anyone walking past would have thought I was sitting on a vibrator, the way I was carrying on.

Back at home, I had a package arrive in the mail. But the size and weight of it, I immediately knew what it was.

It was the 24cm Le Creuset French oven that I redeemed my American Express credit card points to get. I had to fork out another $98 but compared to the other rewards you can redeem your points for, this was the only things I wanted. They had sent me the pot about a month ago but it was red so I sent it back and they finally sent me the 'cobalt blue' one that I asked for.

It's going to look so gorgeous together with my smaller cherry coloured one and my larger yellow coloured one. I'm going to have to line them up one day just to take a photo.

Dinner
Spicy Vietnamese noodles with Pork Belly slices
